First Medical Marijuana Dispensary Opens in Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The first medical marijuana dispensary in Louisville opened its doors on Saturday, marking a significant step for local patients. Kentucky Alternative Care, located on Bardstown Road, welcomed its first customers, with cofounders Dustin Stanley and Su Kang excited to serve the community.
Stanley shared how a patient from just four blocks away visited the dispensary and was thrilled to now have easier access to his medicine. “He was so happy he no longer needed to travel to another state,” Stanley said.
According to Kang, medical cannabis offers numerous health benefits. Many patients dealing with conditions like epilepsy, nausea, and chronic pain can now find relief at their dispensary. “Medical cannabis has shown positive effects on illnesses,” Kang explained, highlighting its use for patients battling cancer to lessen pain and boost appetite.
One of the first customers was David Nataliyeb, who visited to purchase medical cannabis for his chronic nausea disorder. He expressed relief and gratitude, emphasizing the challenges he faced in the past when seeking treatment. “It’s great to have this option available now,” Nataliyeb said.
The changing perception of marijuana also stood out to him. “It used to be frowned upon, but now it’s recognized as a legal option for health,” he noted.
In December, former President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at changing marijuana’s classification from a Schedule I to a Schedule III drug. This would position cannabis in the same category as certain prescription medications like Tylenol with codeine, reflecting a shift in how marijuana is viewed.
Hugh Mabry, another patient, shared his experience using cannabis for pain relief after multiple surgeries. He explained how prescription medications often left him unable to function. “Cannabis helps me think clearly and manage my pain without relying on opioids,” he said.
By opening Kentucky Alternative Care, the hope is that more residents will find the relief they’ve been searching for in their own community.
