Kremlin Official Praises Trump’s Peace Efforts in Ukraine
A senior Russian official has expressed approval for former President Donald Trump, highlighting his aim to promote peace in Ukraine. Dmitry Medvedev, who serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council and is also a former president, remarked that Moscow is optimistic about the potential for renewed dialogue with the United States.
In an interview, Medvedev stated, “Trump genuinely wants to be remembered as a peacemaker and is actively working towards this goal.” He believes that communications between Russia and the United States have become notably more fruitful under Trump’s leadership.
Trump has frequently indicated that a peace deal to resolve the conflict is within reach. During a recent Cabinet meeting, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff shared that he held “productive and constructive meetings” with his Russian counterpart, Kirill Dmitriev, as efforts continue to bring an end to the ongoing war.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that new talks involving Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia are set to take place this week in Abu Dhabi. This announcement comes as Russia intensifies its attacks on key Ukrainian infrastructure, adding further hardships for civilians facing harsh winter conditions.
Medvedev dismissed allegations that Trump has secret ties with Russia, emphasizing that Trump was elected by the American people and deserves respect for that. He commended Trump for challenging the U.S. political status quo and mentioned that Trump’s direct and sometimes controversial style is often misinterpreted.
He added, “Trump is emotional, but the so-called chaos attributed to him is not entirely accurate. There is a clear and competent strategy behind his actions.”
Reflecting on Trump’s business background, Medvedev quipped that once a businessman, always a businessman, echoing a familiar saying in Russia about former KGB agents. Medvedev, known for his strong stance in Russia’s leadership, has issued warnings about the potential for nuclear escalation since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. He reiterated the importance of preventing further conflict while still anticipating a military resolution favorable to Russia.
“I hope for an end to the conflict soon,” Medvedev stated. “However, we must also consider what comes next. Our objective is to secure a victory that prevents future disputes.”
