Madras High Court Issues Anti-Piracy Order to Safeguard Rani Mukerji’s Mardaani 3 Before Launch

The Madras High Court has taken an important step to protect the upcoming film Mardaani 3, starring Rani Mukerji, by issuing an ad-interim anti-piracy injunction. This decision comes just before the film’s theatrical release, and it was made following a request from the film’s producer, Yash Raj Films, who is worried about potential piracy issues.

Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy’s order prevents internet service providers (ISPs) and cable operators from broadcasting or sharing the film without permission. The goal is to stop any illegal online streaming or distribution before the film officially debuts in cinemas.

The Court highlighted that unauthorized broadcasts could cause major damage to the copyright holder, noting that once pirated content becomes available to the public, it can significantly harm the producer’s financial interests.

However, the Court also expressed concern that broad anti-piracy orders might unintentionally impact legitimate businesses, including ISPs and cable operators who are not involved in piracy. To address this, the injunction will remain effective as long as Yash Raj Films provides a guarantee to cover any genuine business losses that may occur due to the order.

Yash Raj Films took this legal action amid worries that Mardaani 3 could face unauthorized airing or distribution, a concern that many filmmakers share as they release high-profile movies.

Mardaani 3 is the third movie in the Mardaani series, with Rani Mukerji reprising her role as a dedicated police officer. Directed by Abhiraj Minawala, the film is set to hit theatres on January 30, 2026.

This isn’t the first time the Madras High Court has taken such measures. Recently, it also issued a similar injunction to prevent unauthorized broadcasts of the Hindi film Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, reinforcing the judicial system’s commitment to combating film piracy ahead of major releases.
