Former Cricketer Warns of Crisis if Pakistan Withdraws from 2026 T20 World Cup
Basit Ali, a former cricketer, has raised concerns about the impact on broadcasters if Pakistan decides to withdraw from the 2026 T20 World Cup, which is set to take place in India and Sri Lanka. The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Mohsin Naqvi, has indicated that the final decision regarding their participation will depend on government guidance.
Ali’s comments come on the heels of Bangladesh’s firm stance against traveling to India due to security worries, which led to their removal from the tournament. He emphasized the chaos that would ensue if Pakistan also pulled out, particularly because the eagerly awaited match between India and Pakistan may not happen.
“If Pakistan doesn’t participate, the broadcasters will face significant challenges. If Pakistan withdraws, who will take their place? A match between India and another team wouldn’t attract the same interest as an India versus Pakistan clash,” Ali expressed during his appearance on the Game Plan YouTube show.
He further commended Naqvi for his comments at a recent press conference, suggesting that it has put the International Cricket Council (ICC) in a tough situation. “What he said has really shaken things up. He mentioned consulting the government about our involvement. His words complicate matters for the ICC. Pakistan shouldn’t boycott, but if the government insists on standing with Bangladesh, what happens then?” Ali added.
ICC Warns Pakistan of Possible Consequences
In related news, the ICC has reportedly issued a stern warning to Pakistan regarding potential sanctions if they consider boycotting the T20 World Cup. Sources indicate that a withdrawal could harm Pakistan’s reputation in international cricket and lead to long-term financial issues for the PCB.
Amidst this uncertainty, Pakistan announced a 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup, notably excluding senior players like Mohammad Rizwan and Haris Rauf.
As discussions continue, the cricket community watches closely to see how the situation will unfold.
