A 51-year-old man of Indian descent has been arrested in Georgia after reportedly shooting his wife and three relatives, authorities said. The suspect, Vijay Kumar, was taken into custody near the Lawrenceville home where the incident took place early Friday morning, according to police.
The victims include Kumar’s wife, Meemu Dogra, aged 43, and other relatives: Gourav Cumar (33), Nidhi Chander (37), and Harish Chander (38). The Indian Consulate in Atlanta expressed sorrow over the tragedy, noting their commitment to helping the grieving family.
The police reported that an argument broke out between Kumar and Dogra at their Atlanta home. After the dispute, they traveled with their 12-year-old child to the home of relatives on Brook Ivy Court in Lawrenceville. The family home also housed two other children, aged seven and ten.
Following the shooting, it was Kumar’s child who called 911 for help. Authorities stated that the motive for the incident is still under investigation, but it appears to be related to family issues.
Officers arrived at the scene around 2:30 AM after receiving reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered four adults deceased inside the house, all with gunshot wounds. The three children present were found hiding in a closet and were unharmed.
Kumar now faces serious charges, including four counts of aggravated assault, felony murder, and malice murder, along with charges of cruelty to children.
