US, Russia, and Ukraine Engage in Diplomatic Dialogue in Abu Dhabi Over Territorial Tensions

U.S., Russia, and Ukraine Hold Talks in Abu Dhabi

The leaders of the United States, Russia, and Ukraine met in Abu Dhabi, UAE, to discuss key issues preventing an end to the ongoing conflict that has lasted nearly four years. This is the first joint meeting of its kind since 2022.

The trilateral discussions follow recent meetings involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with Donald Trump in Davos, and Russian President Vladimir Putin with U.S. officials, including Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Witkoff and Kushner arrived in the UAE after their discussion with Putin in Moscow just days prior.

Pressure Mounts for a Peace Deal

As the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion approaches, there is growing pressure on Zelenskyy and Putin to reach a peace agreement. Trump has expressed a desire to see the war brought to an end.

Russia is demanding that Ukraine concede parts of the Donbas region, while Zelenskyy has consistently opposed giving up any territory. However, the ongoing talks in Abu Dhabi indicate that he may be open to negotiations.

Critical Discussion on Donbas

“The question of Donbas is key,” Zelenskyy remarked, mentioning the importance of the discussions planned for today and tomorrow in Abu Dhabi. His aides have indicated that talks could continue into Saturday.

Meanwhile, Ukrainians are facing harsh winter conditions as ongoing Russian strikes have damaged the country’s power infrastructure. Maxim Timchenko, a leader in Ukraine’s energy sector, warned that the situation is nearing a “humanitarian catastrophe.”

Future Insights and U.S. Involvement

When asked about the potential for a future meeting with all three leaders, Trump noted that meetings are always beneficial but didn’t commit to specifics. He expressed skepticism about Putin’s intentions regarding a complete takeover of Ukraine.

“What’s happened is that there were moments when both leaders were unwilling to negotiate,” Trump remarked. “Now, it seems they both want to reach an agreement. We’ll see what happens.”

The topics under discussion have been the subject of debate for several months, reflecting the complex dynamics at play in the ongoing conflict.
