Advice for Indian Diaspora Amid Rising Tensions in the U.S.
Indian-origin immigration lawyer Rahul Reddy has issued a warning to the Indian community living in the United States about rising hostility towards them. He emphasized the need for caution as an atmosphere of fear has begun to settle in.
Reddy pointed out that, while Indians are not specifically targeted like some other communities, there is still a possibility of backlash. He advised individuals to refrain from public displays of religious identity to avoid becoming targets.
His comments come in light of recent divisive remarks made by Texas Attorney General candidate Aaron Reitz, who referred to Indians as “un-assimilated” and expressed fears about Texas becoming similar to Indian cities. According to Reddy, such statements only contribute to a growing sense of unease within the Indian diaspora.
To navigate these challenging times, Reddy encouraged community members to avoid actions that could draw negative attention. For instance, he suggested that fans of Indian films should maintain decorum at theaters, and instead of loud celebrations, consider community-focused activities like planting trees in honor of their favorite films or actors.
Texas, home to a significant Indian population and many Hindu temples, has recently become a center of anti-Indian sentiment. For example, the Statue of Unity in Sugar Land, a statue of the Hindu deity Hanuman, has drawn ire from some local politicians.
Reddy’s message is clear: in these turbulent times, staying low-key may be the best strategy for the Indian diaspora in the U.S.
