Danish PM Affirms Sovereignty Amid Greenland Discussions with Trump
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has reaffirmed that Denmark will not compromise on its sovereignty, despite President Trump’s announcement of a preliminary agreement regarding Greenland. In her recent statement, she emphasized that while Denmark is open to talks with allies, such discussions must respect the nation’s “territorial integrity.”
Frederiksen noted that security in the Arctic is a priority for the entire NATO alliance. She remarked, “It is natural for these matters to be discussed between NATO’s Secretary General and the President of the United States.” She reiterated Denmark’s commitment to working with NATO to enhance security in the region.
“We can discuss all political matters, such as security and economy. However, our sovereignty is non-negotiable,” she stated clearly.
The Danish leader added that decisions concerning Denmark and Greenland should be made solely by the people of those regions. She expressed a desire to continue constructive dialogue with allies on strengthening Arctic security.
President Trump made headlines by suggesting that a “framework” for a deal regarding Greenland was established during his meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. He described this potential agreement as beneficial for the United States and NATO allies.
In a separate address at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, Trump assured that he would not use force to claim Greenland. He stated, “What we want is a place called Greenland, but I won’t use excessive force to get it.”
Following Trump’s remarks, Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen welcomed the president’s decision to rule out using force and suggested having discussions to address U.S. security concerns in the Arctic while respecting Denmark’s boundaries.
This ongoing dialogue highlights the complexities of international relations, especially when it comes to territorial issues.
