KYIV: Concern Over Distractions Amid Ongoing Conflict
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his worries on Tuesday about US President Donald Trump’s focus on acquiring Greenland, cautioning that it might distract attention from Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, which is approaching its four-year anniversary.
Last week, Trump threatened to impose tariffs of up to 25 percent on European countries that oppose his Greenland acquisition plans. This stance has sparked anger in Brussels and tested the unity of the NATO alliance like never before.
As Ukraine faces a surge in Russian attacks on its energy systems, Zelensky emphasized the importance of keeping Western allies united amidst tensions. “I’m concerned about any loss of focus during this extensive conflict,” he said.
He pointed out that the issues regarding Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, and the war in Ukraine should not be seen as comparable. “We are in a full-scale war with a clear aggressor and specific victims,” he stated.
Zelensky also urged the United States to engage in diplomatic discussions with Europe. “I hope America truly listens to Europe in a diplomatic manner. I believe this approach will help avoid significant threats,” he added.
