Greenland Rallies Against Trump’s Bold Bid for Ownership

Protests Erupt in Greenland Against U.S. Acquisition Push

Protests took place in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, on Saturday as many citizens voiced their opposition to President Donald Trump’s proposal to buy the Arctic island. Demonstrators made it clear that Greenland is “not for sale” and emphasized their desire to shape their own future.

“We do not want to be Americans,” one protester declared during the rally, expressing the sentiments of many.

These protests come after Trump reiterated his interest in acquiring Greenland, which he cites as strategically important to U.S. national security because of its mineral resources and location. In a recent social media post, he threatened to impose tariffs on European countries if a deal for Greenland’s purchase isn’t reached.

According to Trump, countries like Denmark would face a 10% tariff beginning in February, potentially increasing to 25% in June, remaining in place “until a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland.”

Some protesters wore red baseball caps mimicking Trump’s signature “Make America Great Again” hats, but with a twist: “Make America Go Away.”

Thousands marched in Nuuk, led by Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, carrying flags and shouting “Kalaallit Nunaat,” which means Greenland in their native language. Nielsen addressed the crowd outside the U.S. consulate, receiving enthusiastic cheers from supporters.

“It’s vital to show that Greenland is not for sale. This is our home,” stated Naja Holm, a civil servant who participated in the demonstration.

After Trump’s statements, world leaders reacted sharply. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson commented that Europe would not be “blackmailed,” while French President Emmanuel Macron called the tariff threats unacceptable and affirmed that Europe would respond collectively.

In response to the uproar, Dutch Prime Minister David van Weel stated that military exercises in Greenland aim to enhance security in the Arctic. His comments reflect a shared concern among European nations regarding the U.S. stance on Greenland.

Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, has a population of approximately 57,000. While all political parties in Greenland’s parliament support the idea of eventual independence, they prefer to remain associated with Denmark rather than be absorbed by the United States.
