Iran Introduces Monthly Payments Amid Growing Protests
Iran’s government recently announced a plan to provide its citizens with monthly payments of about $7. This decision comes in response to rising economic challenges and widespread protests throughout the country.
The announcement was made on Monday by Fatemeh Mohajerani, a government spokesperson, during a broadcast on Iranian State TV. She stated that this initiative aims to help families maintain their purchasing power, control inflation, and ensure food security.
This new strategy shifts focus from traditional import subsidies to direct financial support for the population. Around $10 billion, previously allocated for import subsidies, will now be distributed among the public.
Eligible citizens will receive one million Iranian tomans, which they can use as credit to purchase goods. The labor minister indicated that nearly 80 million people, a significant portion of Iran’s population, will benefit from this program.
Economic pressures in Iran have increased due to international sanctions and declining oil revenue, which have fueled recent protests. Reports indicate that the value of the national currency has plummeted by more than half against the U.S. dollar. Additionally, inflation rates have soared, reaching 42.2% in December.
The recent payments were announced during a time of significant unrest, with protests involving merchants, students, and various community members. Many marketplaces have been closed, and demonstrations have taken place at universities.
Moreover, reports from the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists in Iran highlighted that protests have spread to at least 78 cities. Demonstrators are calling for change and an end to the regime led by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Recent updates indicate that the government has responded with force, resulting in casualties and numerous arrests, including of children.
As Iran navigates these complex challenges, the government’s new payment plan may be its attempt to quell unrest and support its citizens during difficult times.
