Ukraine Denies Attack on Putin’s Residence Amid Rising Tensions
KYIV: Ukraine stated on Tuesday that there is no credible evidence supporting Russia’s claim that it launched a drone attack on one of President Vladimir Putin’s residences. Ukrainian officials accused Moscow of spreading misinformation to influence ongoing peace discussions regarding the war.
Many of Ukraine’s allies have cast doubt on Russia’s accusations. A source from the French presidential office noted that the Kremlin’s assertions lacked solid backing, even after verification with partner nations.
President Volodymyr Zelensky labeled Russia’s claims a “complete fabrication.” He announced plans to meet with leaders from allied nations on January 6 in France to rejuvenate peace talks. Speaking to reporters, Zelensky urged partners to investigate the situation, asserting, “Our negotiating team connected with the American team. We reviewed the details and understand it’s fake.”
The Kremlin described the alleged drone strike as a “terrorist act” and a “personal attack on Putin.” However, they admitted to not having evidence to support this, claiming that all drones involved were shot down. Moscow also stated that the Russian military would determine its response and indicated a tougher stance in negotiations as a result.
For nearly four years, Russia has been launching near-daily assaults with drones and missiles on Ukraine, leading to significant loss of life.
European Leaders Stand with Ukraine
In response to Moscow’s allegation, European leaders showed solidarity with Ukraine. Zelensky announced a summit on January 6 with the “coalition of the willing,” a group of Western countries committed to supporting Ukraine. This would follow a security advisors’ meeting scheduled for January 3 in Ukraine.
Germany’s Friedrich Merz emphasized on social media the need for transparency and cooperation from all parties involved, including Russia.
Contrastingly, US President Donald Trump criticized Ukraine’s actions, despite the country asserting the incident was staged. “President Putin told me he was attacked. It’s not good,” Trump commented. He added, “It’s one thing to be offensive; it’s another thing to attack his house.” Details about Putin’s whereabouts during the alleged attack remain unclear, as his residences often remain secretive.
Putin’s Residence Under Scrutiny
The late Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny had revealed details about one of Putin’s lavish residences located by a lake in the Novgorod region. According to investigations, Putin has frequently utilized this location since the onset of the war in Ukraine due to its seclusion and enhanced security.
Moscow’s allegations come at a crucial time for negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict. Ukraine has indicated it supports 90 percent of a peace plan proposed by the US, yet Russia has been reluctant to settle for terms that do not meet its demands. Putin has often reiterated his intention to seize additional territories in Ukraine if diplomatic efforts falter.
In recent weeks, Russia has intensified its advance in eastern Ukraine, capturing more villages regularly. On Tuesday, Ukraine’s naval forces accused Russia of conducting drone strikes on two civilian ships in the Odesa region, which has suffered multiple attacks.
Additionally, Ukraine mandated the evacuation of several villages in the northern Chernigiv region due to heavy shelling from Russian forces, further escalating tensions in the ongoing conflict.
