Indian-Origin Psychologist Pranita Venkatesh Becomes San Carlos’ Youngest Mayor

In a remarkable shift in American politics, Indian-Americans are making their mark this year. Following Zohran Mamdani’s historic win as the mayor of New York City, Pranita Venkatesh has now stepped into the spotlight as the youngest mayor of San Carlos, California.

Venkatesh took her oath of office on December 8, 2025, in a city with a population of about 28,000, nestled in San Mateo County and close to the bustling tech center of Silicon Valley. She is celebrated as one of the first leaders of South Asian descent in the area.

Who is Pranita Venkatesh?

Pranita Venkatesh, who comes from the Indo-Fiji community, was warmly welcomed as mayor. She was born in Fiji to Indian parents and moved to California with her family when she was just four years old. In 2009, she and her husband settled in San Carlos, where they have raised their two children for the past 15 years.

Prior to her political career, Venkatesh served as a child psychologist in East Palo Alto and worked as a buyer at Macy’s. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame de Namur and a master’s degree in early childhood and clinical psychology. Currently, she is the director of Paragon Montessori, a preschool in San Carlos.

Elected to the San Carlos City Council in 2022 with support from the San Mateo Democratic Party, Venkatesh previously contributed to the city’s growth as a member of the Economic Development Advisory Commission for three years.

Plans for San Carlos

In an interview with Scoot Scoop, a local news source, Venkatesh outlined her key priorities for the community: public safety, childcare, economic stability, infrastructure improvements, and affordable housing. After her swearing-in ceremony, she expressed her commitment to connecting community needs with effective governance.

Venkatesh’s election is seen as a reflection of the diverse community in San Carlos. The Hindy American Foundation praised her achievement, emphasizing that her leadership brings a vital voice for representation in local politics.

As she embarks on her new role, many are eager to see how Venkatesh will contribute to San Carlos while honoring her culture and heritage.
