Bruno Fernandes Defends Cristiano Ronaldo’s Role in Portugal Team
Bruno Fernandes, the Manchester United midfielder, has joined the conversation about Cristiano Ronaldo’s place in the Portugal national team. He strongly disagrees with the view that the team performs better without the legendary player. As discussions heat up before the 2026 World Cup, Fernandes has stepped forward to highlight the unique contributions Ronaldo brings to the squad, emphasizing that his talents are hard to replace.
This debate gained momentum after Portugal’s impressive 9-1 victory over Armenia in their final World Cup qualifier, a match Ronaldo missed due to suspension. This victory followed a disappointing loss to the Republic of Ireland. In an interview with Canal 11, Fernandes argued that evaluating Portugal’s success based solely on Ronaldo’s presence oversimplifies a complex situation. He pointed out that all players contribute different strengths to the team.
“Cristiano remains a top player in the box. I get that some people think we are better off without him and that the players can move more freely. I believe that if we feel that way, it’s partly on us. We shouldn’t worry about whether Cristiano is on the field because he offers us valuable skills,” Fernandes explained.
He also noted that when Ronaldo is not on the pitch, players like Goncalo Ramos can shine in their own ways, highlighting their strengths in pressing and making clever runs.
At 40 years old, Ronaldo is still the leading scorer in men’s international football, with an impressive 143 goals across 226 matches since his debut in 2003. His international career faced some uncertainty during the 2022 World Cup when he was benched, but his strong performances at Al Nassr helped him earn his place back on the team under coach Roberto Martínez.
Fernandes remarked, “When I’m not out there and Bernardo Silva plays as a number 10, he keeps possession better and helps with final passes. Every player adds something different. Cristiano is just like us; we need to adapt and highlight each other’s strengths for the team’s benefit.”
Portugal has seen a successful period recently, winning the UEFA Nations League title against Euro 2024 champions Spain. They easily qualified for the 2026 World Cup by topping their group with four wins and just one loss, scoring 20 goals while conceding seven. Ronaldo was the team’s top scorer in this campaign with five goals.
Although the recent victory over Armenia, where Fernandes and Joo Neves each scored hat-tricks, sparked discussions about a more dynamic team without Ronaldo, Fernandes remains focused on the bigger picture. For him, it’s not about replacing Ronaldo but learning to work together and making the most of each player’s skills, including those of their most iconic star.
