U.S. and Ukraine in Ongoing Peace Talks Amid Tensions with Russia
Former President Donald Trump has expressed concern that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not yet reviewed a new peace proposal aimed at ending the war with Russia. This statement comes as talks between U.S. and Ukrainian officials continue in Miami.
“I’m a bit disappointed that President Zelenskyy hasn’t read the proposal yet, as of just a few hours ago,” Trump told reporters at an event on Sunday. He noted that while Zelenskyy’s team is supportive, the president himself has not engaged with the plan.
Trump also remarked on Russia’s ambitions, suggesting, “Russia would likely prefer to take all of Ukraine, but I don’t think Zelenskyy is agreeable to that.”
Zelenskyy mentioned that he recently spoke with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. The three discussed several issues, including strategies to conclude Russia’s ongoing invasion and to prevent further aggression from Moscow.
Putin Acknowledges Peace Talks
Russian President Vladimir Putin, meanwhile, stated that the discussions were productive but stressed that his demands remain unchanged. He conveyed, “The war will only conclude when Russia secures control over the Donbas region or Ukrainian troops retreat.”
Zelenskyy is expected to meet with his negotiating team soon to gather more information on the latest discussions, particularly following a lengthy meeting that Witkoff and Kushner had with Putin.
Putin recently made a visit to India, where he emphasized the importance of negotiations with the U.S., reiterating that while discussions can be extensive, his demands have specific boundaries.
Escalating Conflict in Ukraine
As diplomatic efforts continue, Russia has intensified its military actions. Zelenskyy reported that in just a week, Russian forces launched over 1,600 drones and numerous missiles targeting Ukrainian cities, further complicating peace efforts.
Zelenskyy is scheduled to engage with European leaders in London to discuss the U.S.-led peace initiative. This meeting comes at a critical time, highlighting the urgent need for a resolution to the ongoing conflict.
