Multiplex Association of India Raises Red Flags over Netflix-Warner Bros. Blockbuster Deal, Warns of Threat to Theatrical Landscape

The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) has voiced significant concerns regarding Netflix’s planned acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, describing it as a potential threat to the film industry in India. The MAI, representing various multiplex chains, warned that this merger could disrupt the availability of major studio films in cinemas, which are essential for drawing audiences and generating revenue.

On December 5, Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery announced a major agreement worth approximately $82.7 billion, marking one of the largest mergers in the entertainment sector. This deal is anticipated to conclude after Warner Bros. separates its Global Networks division in the third quarter of 2026, bringing popular brands such as HBO and HBO Max under Netflix’s control. Although Netflix has promised to uphold Warner Bros.’ theatrical releases, the MAI remains skeptical, citing Netflix’s past practices regarding cinema releases.

Kamal Gianchandani, President of MAI, emphasized the importance of a diverse and large Indian theatrical market. Warner Bros. has been a vital partner to Indian cinemas, consistently contributing to successful releases. Gianchandani pointed out that cinemas are not merely entertainment venues; they are cultural centers that significantly impact the economy, supporting millions of jobs across various sectors.

The MAI voiced concerns that Netflix’s approach to theatrical releases—often limited and restrictive—could drastically diminish the variety of studio content available in cinemas. Gianchandani warned that if this acquisition goes ahead, it could lead to fewer high-quality films in theaters and shorter or absent theatrical runs, negatively affecting revenues, consumer options, and the overall film ecosystem in India.

The association stressed that a merger of this magnitude deserves thorough examination and plans to present its worries to relevant regulatory bodies in India and beyond.

As discussions about the Netflix-Warner Bros. deal continue, MAI’s position highlights the ongoing tension between streaming services and traditional cinema, a conflict that could alter how Indian audiences engage with global films in the future.
