Putin Visits India: A Diplomatic Journey

Russian President Vladimir Putin is on a significant visit to India, marking his first state visit in over four years. Arriving at New Delhi’s Palam Airport on Thursday evening, he was warmly welcomed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two leaders shared a car as they left the airport, highlighting their strong rapport.

This trip holds importance as it coincides with the 23rd Annual India-Russia Summit. It is also notable as it is Putin’s first visit to India since the ongoing conflict in Ukraine began. During a private dinner hosted by PM Modi, the Prime Minister gifted Putin a Russian translation of the Bhagavad Gita, symbolizing the cultural ties between the two nations.

Itinerary Highlights

Putin’s itinerary for his two-day visit includes:

  • Friday: After the private dinner, he will attend a ceremonial reception hosted by President Droupadi Murmu.
  • A wreath-laying ceremony at Rajghat to honor Mahatma Gandhi.
  • Meetings at the Hyderabad House, where both leaders will discuss deepening defense ties, trade, and energy cooperation. There are expectations that they will talk about Russia potentially supplying Su-57 fighter jets to India.
  • The two leaders’ discussions are anticipated to cover the ongoing efforts by the United States to negotiate peace in Ukraine.
  • Following their meeting, a press conference will be held, with statements expected around 1:50 PM.
  • Later in the day, Putin will attend a business event and meet with President Murmu before departing for Moscow in the evening.

Significance of the Visit

Former Indian diplomat Rajiv Bhatia emphasized the visit’s importance, especially against the backdrop of global tensions and the evolving dynamics of the G20. He highlighted the need for enhanced cooperation in areas like trade and technology, aiming for a target of $100 billion in bilateral trade by 2030.

Additionally, onlookers noted Putin’s appreciation for India’s progress over the past 77 years, calling it near “miraculous.” Conversations are also expected to focus on military projects, including the overhaul of Su-30 jets and air defense systems.

As this visit unfolds, it reflects the ongoing partnership between India and Russia, emphasizing a relationship not directed against any third country but aimed at mutual growth and collaboration.
