Zelensky Hits Paris for Backing as Trump Champions His Agenda

PARIS: On Monday, President Volodyr Zelensky made a strategic visit to Paris to strengthen European support for Ukraine amid ongoing tensions with Russia. He met with President Emmanuel Macron as discussions in the U.S. aimed at finding a diplomatic solution to the conflict gained momentum.

During their talks at the Elysee Palace, Zelensky reviewed a proposal from former U.S. President Donald Trump. This plan raised concerns among European leaders, who worried it might yield too much to Russian demands.

Complicating the situation, a recent corruption scandal has led to significant changes within Zelensky’s team, resulting in the dismissal of his chief negotiator and chief of staff, Andriy Yermak.

As Russia’s military campaign continues, Ukraine faces increased challenges on the battlefield just over three years into the invasion. U.S. and Ukrainian negotiators reported productive talks in Florida over the weekend, with Trump expressing optimism about reaching an agreement.

Following a phone conversation with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb, who has positive relations with both the U.S. and Ukraine, Zelensky described the discussions as “very constructive.” He indicated that key decisions about Ukraine’s next steps would be made after the Florida delegation returned.

Zelensky emphasized that this week could be crucial for diplomatic efforts, echoing comments from EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas about the progress made in recent talks.

The U.S. has proposed a comprehensive plan to end the conflict, which includes withdrawing Ukrainian forces from the Donetsk region. Critics say this plan closely resembles Russian demands for recognition of territories like Crimea, Donetsk, and Lugansk as Russian.

After recent talks in Geneva, modifications were made to the initial proposal in response to feedback from Kyiv and European allies, but the details remain somewhat unclear.

Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is set to visit Moscow soon to continue discussions, including a meeting with President Vladimir Putin. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the Florida negotiations as productive but acknowledged that further discussions are needed.

Trump also noted the ongoing political difficulties in Kyiv, stating, “Ukraine’s got some difficult little problems.”

The urgency for diplomatic resolution comes against a backdrop of ongoing violence, with deadly airstrikes hitting Ukraine’s capital and other regions recently. Furthermore, reports suggest Ukraine conducted attacks on two oil tankers in the Black Sea suspected of transporting sanctioned Russian oil. Following a drone strike, one of Russia’s major oil terminals ceased operations, which the Caspian Pipeline Consortium deemed a “terrorist attack.” Ukraine often targets Russian energy infrastructure to weaken its war efforts.
