Stuart Broad Reflects on His Viral Reaction During Ashes Test
Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad has shared his thoughts about the emotional moment he experienced when Joe Root was dismissed in the first Test against Australia during the Ashes series 2025–26. Root’s struggles continued as he was out for a duck in the first innings and scored just 8 runs in the second while playing in Perth.
As Root hit the ball onto his stumps during the second innings, Broad’s disappointment was evident. He closed his eyes in frustration while commentating, and this moment quickly spread across social media, turning Broad into an unexpected meme.
Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Broad admitted that his reaction mirrored the feelings of many England fans. “I think that was exactly how every England cricket fan felt. You just wanted to close your eyes for 10 seconds and hope it wasn’t true,” he said.
Despite the setback, Broad expressed his excitement for the upcoming matches in the series. He noted how Ashes cricket brings out strong emotions for both Australian and English fans. “The game was unpredictable, and if it continues at this pace, we’re in for a thrilling summer,” he added. Broad emphasized that England needs to seize crucial moments to improve their performance.
In the earlier stages of the match, England seemed to be in control. After their bowlers, led by captain Ben Stokes, restricted Australia to just 132 runs, England had a solid 105-run lead at one point. However, they faced a sudden collapse, getting bowled out for 164 runs. Australia then easily chased down the target of 205 runs in just over 28 overs, thanks to a brilliant century by Travis Head.
Following this defeat, England now trails 0–1 in the five-match series. They will need to regroup quickly to prepare for the next pink-ball Test, set to start on December 4 in Brisbane.
