Grizzly Bear Attack on School Group in British Columbia
In a disturbing incident on Thursday, teachers helped protect a group of students from a grizzly bear that attacked them while they were walking along a trail in Bella Coola, British Columbia. According to Inspector Kevin Van Damme from the Conservation Officer Service, the bear emerged from the woods and launched an attack as the group paused on their hike.
The brave teachers used pepper spray and a bear banger to fend off the bear successfully. However, the attack resulted in injuries to eleven individuals, including students from the fourth and fifth grades. Reports indicate that two of these individuals are in critical condition, while another two are in serious condition. The remaining seven were treated on-site by medical personnel.
The incident occurred in Bella Coola, a town located over 400 miles north of Vancouver. All injured parties were taken to a local hospital before being transferred for further treatment in Vancouver, as per the British Columbia Health Services.
As of Friday, wildlife officials were actively searching for the bear, which they suspect may have been injured prior to the attack. Van Damme emphasized the distress this incident has caused in the community and acknowledged their ongoing partnership with the Nuxalk Nation to raise awareness and ensure safety.
Tamara Davidson, British Columbia’s Minister of Environment and Parks, praised the teachers for their courage, referring to them as “true heroes.” She noted that their preparedness played a significant role in defending the students from a potentially worse outcome.
Community members are hoping for a quick recovery for the victims and their families amid this alarming event.
