Gut Bacteria May Hold Key to Understanding Food Allergies, Health Experts Reveal

New Efforts to Tackle Food Allergies Through Gut Health

With approximately 32 million Americans dealing with food allergies, health experts are diving deep to uncover the underlying causes, particularly focusing on the role of gut microbiomes.

On Monday, the Food Allergy Fund (FAF) held a forum in Washington, D.C., featuring prominent figures like HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, FDA Chief Martin Makary, and NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya.

In a conversation with health reporters, Makary explained that our intestines are home to many different types of bacteria that usually work in harmony. However, he noted that modern diets, antibiotics, and other environmental changes can disrupt this balance. “This imbalance can lead to inflammation and various health issues, including food allergies,” he said.

Makary emphasized, “Gut health is central to overall health.” He pointed out that some beneficial microbes may be lost due to our changing diets and lifestyles, which could be linked to the increasing number of food allergies.

Researchers at Siolta Therapeutics are exploring this idea further. Their oral microbiome therapy, known as STMC-103H, is being tested in newborns at risk for allergies. Early findings from a Phase 2 trial involving 238 infants indicate that this therapy might reduce the risk of developing food allergies by 77%, suggesting that enhancing gut bacteria early on could help prevent allergies from forming.

Ilana Golant, the founder and CEO of FAF, pointed out that food allergies might signal a larger health concern related to gut health. The FAF recently launched its Food Allergy Fund Microbiome Collective in New York City to investigate how gut bacteria could potentially prevent or treat not only allergies but also autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases.

“Addressing allergies could open doors to new ways to prevent and treat various diseases that affect millions,” Golant noted.

Food allergies are common, impacting about one in ten adults and one in thirteen children. Shockingly, someone in the U.S. is treated for a severe allergic reaction every three minutes. Peanut allergies, in particular, are strikingly prevalent, with studies suggesting that introducing peanuts early could significantly lower the chances of developing allergies in children.

Secretary Kennedy reflected on this issue during the forum, noting that food allergies among children were rare during his childhood. He remarked, “I never met anyone with a peanut allergy.” However, he now faces this reality firsthand, as his own son suffers from severe allergies. “By the age of two, we had visited the emergency room about 22 times,” he shared, highlighting the urgency of finding answers.

Kennedy concluded, “There may be many causes, or there may be just one — we don’t know yet. But we’re committed to figuring it out and breaking the silence around this issue.”
