India vs South Africa: Dinesh Karthik Cautions that No. 3 Spot May Hamper Washington Sundar’s Bowling 力

Karthik and Pollock Weigh in on Washington Sundar’s Role in Test Cricket

Dinesh Karthik has shared his thoughts on Washington Sundar’s recent move to the No. 3 batting position following the Kolkata Test between India and South Africa. Sundar replaced his fellow Tamil Nadu player, Sai Sudharsan, and made a commendable contribution, scoring 29 runs in the first innings and 31 in the second.

However, Sundar’s bowling was limited; he bowled only one over throughout the match, which came during the first innings. Karthik pointed out that with 35 wickets in 16 Tests, Sundar’s promotion sends a clear message from the team management that they want him to prioritize batting over bowling. In an interview with Cricbuzz, Karthik mentioned that balancing both skills could be challenging for Sundar.

Karthik stated, “The question arises as to what role Washington Sundar will play in Test cricket. If he is being sent in at No. 3, it suggests he needs to concentrate more on his batting. Spending longer hours practicing batting means less time for bowling, which is physically demanding.”

He added, “The message is clear: we expect big runs from you, and this might impact his bowling in the future. It’s a complex situation.”

Pollock’s Take on Sundar’s Potential

Former South African cricketer Shaun Pollock also weighed in, stating that Sundar has the potential to succeed higher up the order. He believes that the all-rounder should be given more opportunities to develop his batting strategy.

Pollock remarked, “It’s all about finding his approach. He needs time to figure out how to pace his innings. Sundar should be given a chance to play several more Test matches in this position. If it doesn’t work out, then adjustments can be made.”

He expressed that Sundar has often been underutilized and could have been given more chances to showcase his skills. Pollock feels confident that Sundar will refine his batting technique as he gains more experience.

Despite Sundar’s efforts, India ultimately lost the Kolkata Test by 30 runs.
