Kaif Highlights Key Factors Behind India’s Test Defeat to South Africa
Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has pointed out Rishabh Pant’s captaincy as a crucial reason for India’s defeat to South Africa at Eden Gardens. He also emphasized the impact of Shubman Gill’s injury and the team’s ineffective batting during the chase of 124 runs.
During India’s first innings, Gill suffered a neck injury from a whiplash-like movement while playing a slog sweep. This unfortunate event led him to retire hurt, and he was taken to a private hospital for precautionary scans while wearing a cervical collar.
Since Gill was not able to lead the team, Pant took on the captaincy role. Kaif remarked that Pant seemed to struggle with adapting to the spin-heavy conditions of the match.
“We allowed too many singles. Scoring against four spinners on a turning pitch isn’t easy. We should have positioned our fielders better. Pant had difficulty in managing the field placements without Gill, which made an impact,” Kaif noted on his YouTube channel.
Kaif stressed that India missed Gill significantly, both in his leadership and batting skills. When India began their chase of 124 runs, the batting lineup failed to deliver on a surface needing careful shot selection. Only Washington Sundar and Axar Patel showed some promise, while the other batsmen struggled, resulting in India being bowled out for just 93 runs—their second-lowest failed chase at home.
“If Gill had been there, things could have been different. With a stronger lead, we could have put South Africa under real pressure. Not having him, both as a batsman and a captain, was a big loss,” he added.
Gill was discharged from the hospital the next day and returned to the team hotel. Early assessments showed he was making good progress. He is expected to travel with the team to Guwahati for the second Test, but his participation will still depend on his recovery over the coming days.
As India heads to Guwahati, they will need to make better decisions and show stronger batting if they aim to level the series.
