Stockholm Bus Crash Claims Lives During Rush Hour
Several people lost their lives and many others were injured when a bus collided with a bus stop queue in central Stockholm on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred during the busy rush hour, according to police reports.
After the crash, Swedish media captured powerful images depicting a large presence of police, ambulances, and emergency vehicles at the site. Rescue teams were seen helping individuals who were apparently trapped beneath the double-decker bus.
A police statement confirmed there were both injuries and fatalities but did not provide specific details about the victims’ numbers, genders, or ages. Michelle Marcher, a spokesperson for health authorities, informed that two individuals with serious injuries have been taken to the hospital.
As for the cause of the accident, police spokesperson Nadya Norton stated it’s still uncertain. “The investigation will determine exactly what happened. It’s too early to speculate,” she said.
The bus driver has been arrested, and a manslaughter investigation has commenced as a standard procedure. Norton added, “We need to speak with him to decide whether he will be released or kept in custody.”
Police were first alerted to the incident at 3:23 PM local time.
Expressing condolences, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson shared his sorrow over the news, stating, “I’ve heard that several people have died and others have been injured at a bus stop here in Stockholm. My thoughts are with those affected and their families.” He mentioned the victims might have been heading home to loved ones after a long day.
Witness Michelle Mac Key recounted her experience, stating she had just stepped off another bus near the scene. “I crossed the street and saw the bus that had struck the whole queue at the bus stop,” she said.
