Poll Reveals Democrats’ Momentum Surges Ahead of 2026 Elections, Leaving Republicans Playing Catch-Up

Democrats Show More Enthusiasm for Upcoming Elections, Poll Reveals

WASHINGTON: A recent poll shows that Democrats are more excited about voting in the upcoming congressional elections than Republicans. The poll, conducted by Reuters/Ipsos, indicates that President Donald Trump’s approval rating remains steady at 40 percent.

The six-day survey, which concluded on Wednesday, found that 44 percent of registered Democrats feel “very enthusiastic” about voting in the November 3, 2026 elections. In contrast, only 26 percent of Republicans reported similar excitement. Additionally, 79 percent of Democrats expressed that they would regret not voting, compared to 68 percent of Republicans.

Next year, all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and 35 out of 100 Senate seats will be contested. Currently, Republicans hold control over both chambers of Congress.

Democrats have faced challenges since Trump’s presidential win last year, but recent victories in Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial races, as well as a mayoral win in New York City, have boosted the party’s morale.

In California, where Democrats are a dominant force, voters approved a measure to redesign congressional districts, which is expected to benefit the party—countering Republican efforts to redraw districts in other states.

With the midterm elections still a year away, both parties seem closely matched. When asked about their voting preferences if elections were held today, 41 percent of registered voters said they would support the Democratic candidate, while 40 percent favored the Republican. This difference falls within the poll’s margin of error of 3 percentage points.
