Varun Chakravarthy Named Captain of Tamil Nadu for Upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
India’s spin bowler Varun Chakravarthy has been appointed as the captain of the Tamil Nadu team for the 2025–26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which is set to kick off on November 26. Narayan Jagadeesan will step in as the vice-captain.
Chakravarthy recently contributed significantly to India’s success in a T20I series against Australia, where he took five wickets across three matches. This will be his first time leading a team in any capacity. He replaces M Shahrukh Khan, with selectors opting for him over R Sai Kishore and Narayan Jagadeesan, both of whom have previous leadership experience.
The team also includes India’s left-arm speedster T Natarajan, alongside seamer Gurjapneet Singh. In terms of spin, Sai Kishore and M Siddharth are expected to play prominent roles with their left-arm deliveries.
So far, Tamil Nadu’s performance in the Ranji Trophy has been lackluster, as they currently sit sixth in their group with two losses and two draws out of four matches played.
In the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Tamil Nadu is placed in Elite Group D, competing against teams like Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Tripura, Jharkhand, and Saurashtra. They will begin their campaign against Rajasthan in Ahmedabad.
