Creatine May Help With Depression, But Evidence is Uncertain
A recent review has found that creatine, commonly known for enhancing athletic performance, might slightly alleviate symptoms of depression. However, because the results are inconsistent and based on low-quality research, experts say it’s too early to recommend it as a treatment option.
Published in the British Journal of Nutrition, this study looked into how creatine affects depressive symptoms. Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) affects around 280 million people globally and remains a leading cause of disability. Despite available treatments, many individuals facing depression don’t receive adequate help, often due to issues like financial constraints, stigma, or lack of information.
The Role of Creatine in Brain Health
Creatine plays a critical role in supplying energy to the brain, and low levels of it have been associated with depressive symptoms. Some research suggests that a higher intake of creatine may be linked to lower rates of depression, although it has not yet been endorsed by major health guidelines.
Research Methods
To study the effects of creatine, researchers searched several databases for randomized controlled trials involving creatine and placebo groups that measured depressive symptoms. Studies that included co-interventions, such as psychotherapy or medication, were also considered if both groups received these treatments.
Key Findings
The research team reviewed 558 studies and narrowed it down to 34 full-text analyses, ultimately focusing on 11 trials. These studies were mostly small, featuring between 10 to 100 participants and conducted mainly in the United States and Brazil. The participants received a median daily dose of 5 grams of creatine.
Some trials involved additional treatments like antidepressants or psychotherapy. Overall, the duration of these studies ranged from 4 to 10 weeks.
The outcomes showed that while creatine supplementation appeared to reduce depressive symptoms slightly, the overall quality of evidence was deemed “very low,” indicating uncertainty. Although some trials suggested a positive effect, others found no significant difference compared to the placebo.
Cautions and Recommendations
The researchers noted issues with bias in several studies, which could skew the results. While some participants reported adverse effects, such as minor gastrointestinal issues or elevated creatinine levels, overall, the treatments did not lead to significant improvements in quality of life.
In a deeper analysis, positive effects were linked mainly to studies with higher risk of bias, suggesting that the true effectiveness of creatine might be less profound than reported.

In summary, the findings hint at a slight reduction in depressive symptoms among those taking creatine, but this effect is not clinically significant.
