IBM Plans Job Cuts This Quarter
IBM’s CEO, Arvind Krishna, was present at the AI Insight Forum held at Capitol Hill on September 13, 2023.
On Tuesday, the company announced that it would be laying off a small number of its employees this quarter. A spokesperson explained, “In the fourth quarter, we are taking steps that will affect a low single-digit percentage of our global staff.” While some jobs in the U.S. could be impacted, the company expects overall U.S. employment to remain stable compared to last year.
As of the end of 2024, IBM had about 270,000 employees. A cut of even 1% could mean around 2,700 job losses.
This trend isn’t unique to IBM; many tech companies are reducing their workforce as they seek to boost productivity through greater use of artificial intelligence.
