Bangladesh Urges Political Unity for Reform Strategy

Title: Political Disputes Delay Key Reforms in Bangladesh

DHAKA: Tensions among Bangladeshi politicians have put a crucial democratic reform plan on hold, according to the interim government. They have given the political parties a week to find common ground or risk facing unilateral action.

Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and the interim government’s chief advisor, stated that he stepped into a political system that is “completely broken.” This situation arose after he took charge following last year’s uprising.

Yunus has been advocating for this reform charter as a vital step to avert a slip back into authoritarian rule. Although key political parties initially agreed to the document during a ceremony in October, some members are now insisting it be approved through a referendum.

Asif Nazrul, the interim government’s law minister, expressed concern over the ongoing disagreements among political factions. He mentioned that discussions have failed to resolve issues related to the timing of the referendum and the specific topics it should cover.

Bangladesh, home to 170 million people, has experienced political unrest since Sheikh Hasina was ousted in August 2024 and took refuge in India. The “July Charter,” named after the uprising, has become a contentious issue as parties prepare for national elections scheduled for February 2026.

Yunus has promised to resign after the elections, stating that the reform plan aims to enhance checks and balances among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. Key proposals include a two-term limit for prime ministers and expanded powers for the presidency.

Nazrul urged political leaders to unite on the referendum issue as soon as possible, ideally within the week.
