The Kolkata Police’s Detective Department has taken significant steps in an ongoing match-fixing investigation linked to the Kolkata Premier League football tournament. Two officials from the Khidirpur Sports Club, Akash Das and Rahul Saha—also known as Raj—have been arrested as part of this inquiry.
The investigation began after the Indian Football Association (IFA) raised concerns about potential manipulations of match outcomes to benefit from betting schemes. Police reports suggest that the arrested individuals had formed a conspiracy to fix matches in exchange for substantial monetary rewards.
To gather evidence, the Detective Department conducted surveillance and collected digital data, leading them to suspect the involvement of both the Khidirpur club and another club in the league. Following thorough investigation efforts, the two suspects were apprehended.
On November 3rd, Kolkata police filed a formal complaint, documented under several sections of the law, and detained the suspects in the North 24 Parganas district. Preliminary interrogations revealed that both suspects acknowledged their roles in the alleged match-fixing and have indicated the involvement of other individuals.
Authorities have stated that the investigation is still in its early phases, with many footballers’ roles currently under scrutiny. Detectives are looking into the financial transactions related to the accused, and questioning is ongoing to determine the extent of the conspiracy and identify additional individuals involved.
The arrested officials have been presented in court, where police seek custody to further investigate how many matches were affected and whether money transferred internationally was involved in these operations.
