Former Mossad Chief Declares Iran’s Nuclear Facilities Destroyed, Issues Stark Warning to Tehran

Former Mossad Chief Discusses Iran’s Nuclear Threat and Regional Peace Efforts

Yossi Cohen, the former head of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, recently spoke at the Shurat HaDin conference in New York City about the impact of a joint operation by the United States and Israel on Iran’s nuclear sites. This operation, he emphasized, has significantly hindered Iran’s uranium enrichment capabilities. Cohen warned that if Iran renews its nuclear program, Israel is prepared to act again.

Cohen, who led Mossad until 2021, characterized the operation as a pivotal moment for both Israel’s security and the broader diplomatic landscape in the region. “For many years, Iran was a primary concern for us,” he reflected on his time in service.

Since June 2025, Cohen asserted, Iran has faced major setbacks. He echoed President Biden’s assessment that the nuclear facilities were effectively destroyed, stating that Iran is no longer enriching uranium—a notable achievement. Cohen suggested that Iran is aware of the potential for Israel and the U.S. to intervene again if necessary.

He praised the coordinated efforts of the Trump administration, which he credited for facilitating a successful strike against Iranian threats.

Cohen vividly described the operations that dismantled Iran’s air-defense systems and targeted key sites of the Revolutionary Guard. He highlighted the destruction of nuclear facilities that posed existential danger to Israel, proclaiming that they executed their mission “beautifully.”

Early Warning on Iran Nuclear Deal

In his new book, The Sword of Freedom, Cohen recounted a warning he gave to then-President Barack Obama in 2015 about the risks of the Iran nuclear deal. He later had a similar conversation with President Trump, who agreed with Cohen’s negative view on the agreement.

Cohen recalled a significant mission in 2018 when Mossad agents infiltrated Tehran to seize a vast amount of secret documentation about Iran’s nuclear program, underscoring this as a turning point that influenced the U.S.’s decision to withdraw from the nuclear agreement.

Hopeful for Future Peace in the Middle East

Cohen also discussed a recent hostage deal facilitated by the Trump administration, expressing appreciation for allied efforts that secured the release of all living hostages. He expressed hope that the end of the conflict in Gaza could pave the way for renewed diplomatic relations in the Middle East.

He predicted continued efforts for normalization in the region beyond the Abraham Accords, hinting at prospects for agreements with Saudi Arabia and Indonesia.

Cohen reflected on the potential for positive change in the Middle East, stating, “When this war is practically over, we will see a better region.” He emphasized the importance of ongoing diplomatic work to strengthen Israel’s ties globally.

Addressing the Future of Iran

Cohen also shared his belief that change in Iran is possible, despite the challenges posed by its current regime. He expressed hope for international support for the Iranian people, who face harsh government repression.

The conference concluded with a reminder from Shurat HaDin President Nitsana Darshan-Leitner about the ongoing political challenges Israel faces, including pressures for a Palestinian state and rising anti-Israel sentiment.

Cohen’s Political Future?

When asked about his political ambitions, Cohen noted a desire to focus on supporting Israel’s international relationships rather than entering politics at this time. He stressed the need for better diplomatic agreements for the country.

Cohen stated, “I’d love to do whatever it takes to support Israel’s relationships internationally,” indicating his commitment to strengthening Israel’s position on the global stage.
