Thailand Mourns Former Queen Sirikit at Age 93

BANGKOK: Thailand’s former Queen Sirikit has passed away at the age of 93, as confirmed by the palace late Friday. She was the mother of the current King Vajiralongkorn and the wife of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who was the country’s longest-serving monarch.

The royal family holds a special place in the hearts of many Thais, viewed almost as divine figures. Their images are often displayed in homes and public places across the country.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed his sorrow on Saturday, stating, “It is a great loss to the nation.” He plans to postpone his trip to a summit of Southeast Asian leaders in Malaysia in light of the news.

Throughout her 66-year marriage to King Bhumibol, Sirikit was known for her elegant style and her caring role as a mother figure to the nation. Some Western media even compared her to iconic figures like Jacqueline Kennedy.

Local resident Sasis Putthasit shared her feelings on the news. “I knew this day would come, but I didn’t expect it to be today. She was like a mother to us all, and now she’s gone,” she said.

The palace noted that Sirikit had been in and out of the hospital since 2019 due to various health issues, including a recent blood infection. Her condition deteriorated until her passing at Chulalongkorn Hospital.

As a sign of mourning, members of the royal family have begun a year-long period of remembrance. Thai news anchors have also been seen wearing black during broadcasts to honor her memory.

Pavin Chachavalpongpun, a former diplomat and scholar of the monarchy, remarked that her death is significant for both the royal family and the nation, given her popularity and her close ties to the beloved late king.
