Indians’ Diwali Festivities Overseas Spark Debate

Diwali Celebrations Around the World: Joy Mixed with Controversy

As the Indian community globally lights up for Diwali, the festival filled with joy and brightness has seen its fair share of challenges this year. Celebrations in countries like the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom have brought big crowds together. However, these gatherings sometimes left behind a significant amount of waste and even caused damage to properties.

In many cities—including London, New York, and Dallas—videos circulating on social media show the police and fire departments stepping in to manage large crowds. Many people were setting off fireworks late into the night, which led to disturbances in neighborhoods.

For example, an Instagram account for Indians in Canada shared a video of a parking lot in Etobicoke, Ontario, after Diwali celebrations. The scene showed the area littered with remnants of firecrackers.

In Edmonton, Canada, a serious incident occurred when fireworks set a neighboring house on fire, leaving the homeowners devastated as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.

The police in Morrisville, North Carolina, shared an update on their community page about illegal fireworks being lit in Church Street Park. This not only damaged the local cricket field but also created a huge mess, affecting community safety and local sports activities.

In New Jersey, clips went viral showing police stopping fireworks after 10 PM in an attempt to keep the festivities under control.

While these incidents have made headlines, they also contribute to a skewed perception of Indians abroad. Many within the community feel that this reputation is unfair, pointing out that such behavior is not exclusive to festive occasions.

Recently, in theaters showing Indian films like They Call Him OG and Hari Hara Veera Mallu, fans disrupted screenings by throwing confetti and creating chaos. Additionally, loud protests by Indian political party members have been a common sight when leaders visit abroad.

Due to these behaviors, many Indian students and travelers are experiencing difficulties with visa applications, with some reportedly being turned away because of the negative image shaped by a few.

Despite the joy of Diwali, these controversies urge the community to reflect on their actions and the impact on their global reputation.
