New Video Shows Louvre Heist in Action
A recent video seems to capture the moment of a daring theft at the Louvre Museum in Paris. The footage, shared by French broadcaster BFMTV, suggests that this daylight robbery is one of the boldest art heists seen in years.
The clip shows a person wearing a bright yellow jacket near a glass display in the Apollo Gallery, which houses some of the museum’s most valuable treasures. This video was shared with BFMTV, who confirmed its details on Sunday, although the Associated Press has not been able to verify its authenticity independently.
French authorities say the thieves carried out a well-planned attack just after the museum opened. Around 9:30 a.m., they used a basket lift to reach a window on the Louvre’s facade, breaking in to access the Apollo Gallery where royal jewels are displayed.
Reports indicate that the thieves stole jewels once owned by Napoleon III’s court, including pieces from Empress Eugénie’s personal collection. Former FBI art crime expert Tim Carpenter described the theft as swift and purposeful, highlighting how quickly the suspects executed their plan.
After the crime, French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated that the thieves used a basket lift to enter and a disc cutter to break through the glass protecting the jewels.
The investigation is ongoing, and officials are compiling a detailed list of the stolen items. They emphasized that these treasures hold significant historical value beyond their market worth.
Following the heist, the Louvre Museum was closed for investigations, and officials are reviewing surveillance footage to aid in capturing the suspects.
