The Bible as a Guide to Health: An Ancient Approach for Modern Living

Many individuals turn to the Bible during challenging times for comfort and guidance. However, some experts, like Dr. Josh Axe and Jordan Rubin, argue it can also provide insights for improving physical health. They co-wrote a book titled “The Biblio Diet,” which emphasizes the nutritious foods mentioned in the Bible as a framework for modern eating habits that may help address health issues.

Dr. Axe, who practices natural medicine in Tennessee, believes the Bible contains valuable health advice. He claims that following a Bible-inspired diet can aid recovery from various health issues, including depression, heart disease, and diabetes. “The Bible is the greatest health book ever written,” he stresses.

Personal Stories of Healing

Both Axe and Rubin have faced significant health challenges that shaped their dedication to this diet. Rubin’s health struggles began in his teenage years when he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and later faced severe cancer. After visiting multiple doctors without improvement, he was advised to adopt a biblical diet. Remarkably, he claims this approach led to his recovery without traditional treatments like chemotherapy.

Dr. Axe’s journey in health began with his mother’s battle with breast cancer. He formulated a dietary plan for her that incorporated biblical foods, coupled with faith practices such as prayer. His own health issues led him back to these principles, contributing to his healing process.

Building a Bible-Based Diet

The diet advocated by Axe and Rubin focuses on foods highlighted in the scriptures. This includes red meat, ancient grains, olive oil, dairy, and fruits like figs and pomegranates. Rubin points out that red meat is packed with essential nutrients and has been a staple for the Bible’s longest-living figures.

Interestingly, they argue that even bread can be part of a healthy diet when prepared correctly. “With Jesus being called the bread of life, it wouldn’t make sense if bread was bad for everyone,” says Rubin. Olive oil is noted for its numerous health benefits, including support for skin and heart health.

They also recommend natural sweeteners like local honey and emphasize the importance of consuming unprocessed, wholesome foods.

Foods to Avoid

On the flip side, the authors suggest steering clear of certain foods deemed “unclean” in the Bible, such as pork and shellfish. They also warn against modern processed foods packed with unhealthy additives and argue that even healthy foods can become harmful through over-processing.

Fasting as a Spiritual and Physical Practice

In addition to diet, Axe and Rubin highlight fasting as a powerful practice. They believe fasting can promote significant health benefits and even spiritual clarity. Dr. Axe describes fasting as an essential healing method that helps the body remove damaged cells.

Rubin shares that prioritizing spiritual health played a crucial role during his cancer treatment. He engaged in regular prayer and self-reflection, which he views as vital to his recovery.

A Customized Approach to Health

While “The Biblio Diet” provides a solid framework, the authors stress that it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. They encourage individuals to customize their diet based on personal health needs while maintaining flexibility, allowing for diverse food preferences like waffles and pizza made from wholesome ingredients.

Their overarching message is to balance faith and nutrition, believing that taking care of one’s body is a form of worship. “Being healthy is one of the best ways to show the truth of the Bible and its teachings,” Dr. Axe concludes.

This approach to health — rooted in biblical wisdom — aims to inspire individuals to explore their well-being holistically while honoring their faith.
