Barcelona Claims Last-Minute Victory Over Girona in La Liga
In a thrilling La Liga match on Saturday, Barcelona triumphed over Girona with a late goal, winning 2-1. The match was crucial for Barcelona as they sought to end a short losing streak and boost morale before facing Real Madrid in the upcoming Clasico.
Substitute Ronald Araujo made a name for himself by scoring the winning goal during stoppage time. The Uruguayan defender, who was brought on as a forward in the 82nd minute, showed excellent striker instincts. He sprinted to the near post and skillfully redirected Frenkie de Jong’s low cross past Girona’s goalkeeper, Paulo Gazzaniga, leading to joyous celebrations at the Olympic Stadium.
Tensions rose earlier in the match when Barcelona’s coach Hansi Flick was sent off after receiving two quick yellow cards. He protested vehemently about the referee’s decision to allocate only four minutes of stoppage time. Unfortunately, this means he will miss his first Clasico as Barcelona’s manager next week.
With the team missing key players like Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Ferran Torres due to injuries, Flick’s gamble to push Araujo forward proved fruitful. “I’m really happy for Ronald because he gives everything for this team,” Flick commented after the game. “I asked if he could help in attack, and he immediately agreed.”
Araujo also expressed pride in his team’s resilience, stating, “We were coming off two tough losses, but we showed hunger and worked hard to turn things around. Girona made it challenging, but we fought until the end.”
From the start, Barcelona showed their determination. Pedri Gonzalez opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a clever shot that went inside the near post. However, Girona quickly responded when Axel Witsel leveled the match with an incredible bicycle kick just seven minutes later.
For much of the first half, Girona looked the more dangerous side. Cristian Portu hit the post, and Bryan Gil missed a golden chance, while Witsel came close to scoring again. Thanks to some sharp saves from goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, Barcelona managed to stay competitive.
In the second half, Gazzaniga thwarted attempts from Fermin Lopez and Marcus Rashford until Araujo finally broke through with his decisive goal. Girona’s coach, Michel Sanchez, reflected on the defeat with disappointment, noting, “In the final minutes, they could only threaten with crosses. We cleared two, but the third one went in.”
This victory puts Barcelona at the top of La Liga, just one point ahead of Real Madrid, as they prepare for an important Champions League match against Olympiakos on Tuesday and the much-anticipated Clasico next weekend.
