Concerns About Finasteride and Mental Health
A new review highlights worrying connections between the hair loss medication finasteride and mental health issues, including a potential increase in depression and suicidal thoughts. This drug is commonly used to treat androgenetic alopecia, the most prevalent type of baldness.
The review, led by Mayer Brezis from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, suggests that there is enough evidence to classify these mental health risks as genuine concerns associated with finasteride. The findings were shared in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.
Brezis pointed out that warnings about the drug’s mental health effects have been emerging for over two decades, yet little action has been taken by manufacturers or health regulators. Numerous studies dating back to 2002 have indicated a “significant increase” in depression, anxiety, and suicidal behavior among users of finasteride.
Despite its popularity, Brezis believes many users unknowingly endure long-term mental health issues, even after stopping the medication. Reports suggest symptoms such as insomnia, panic attacks, and cognitive difficulties can continue, impacting many lives.
“The delays in recognizing these neuropsychiatric effects are alarming,” said Brezis. “For years, countless patients have faced these serious side effects without any proactive measures taken to protect them.”
Brezis urges regulatory bodies to enforce stricter rules that require ongoing studies to monitor medications post-approval. While the FDA acknowledged depression as a possible side effect in 2011 and suicidality in 2022, Brezis argues that many cases likely go unreported.
He also expressed concern that doctors often prescribe finasteride without fully understanding its risks. “I recommend that both patients and doctors think carefully before using this drug,” he said, adding that the FDA should consider removing finasteride from the market.
Brezis noted that young people often acquire the medication through online sources without knowing the associated risks, including mental health issues.
The drug, manufactured by companies like Merck under names such as Proscar and Propecia, has faced scrutiny over its safety. In response, Organon, the current manufacturer, stated that they stand by the medicine’s safety and encouraged patients to discuss any concerns with their healthcare providers.
The FDA has advised that it’s crucial for patients to weigh the potential risks and benefits with their doctors before starting any medication, including finasteride.
As more studies emerge, the conversation surrounding the safety of finasteride continues, emphasizing the importance of informed healthcare decisions.
