Bermuda Strengthens Its Role in Global Subsea Communications
SINGAPORE and HAMILTON, Bermuda—October 6, 2025
Bermuda has made an exciting announcement to the world: it is ready to boost digital connectivity as a key player in the subsea communications industry. This was highlighted at the recent Submarine Networks World 2025 in Singapore, the largest annual meeting for professionals in the subsea cable sector.
During the conference, representatives from the Bermuda Business Development Agency (BDA) and the Regulatory Authority of Bermuda (RA) showcased how Bermuda is positioning itself as a vital hub for transatlantic cable development. In addition to participating in the event, BDA also hosted a networking event for industry leaders and investors.
Bermuda’s journey to becoming a digital hub gained momentum with the Submarine Communications Cable Act of 2020, which established a favorable regulatory environment for subsea cable projects. Since then, tech giant Google has announced plans for two major transatlantic cables—Nuvem and Sol—to connect in Bermuda, marking the island as a significant player in the global connectivity landscape.
Kendaree Burgess, Managing Director of the BDA, emphasized Bermuda’s unique position: “We have strong relationships in both the U.S. and Europe, which makes us a key point for both physical and digital connections across the Atlantic.” She noted that the island’s robust regulatory framework and support from leading tech companies signal that Bermuda is ready for subsea infrastructure investments.
Craig Davis, Senior Manager of Electronic Communications at the RA, furthered this dialogue at a conference panel titled “Connecting the Caribbean – A Sudden Surge in Subsea Activity.” He discussed how Bermuda is balancing investor confidence with the need for long-term sustainability in the subsea sector.
Bermuda’s involvement in Submarine Networks World 2025 also marked the beginning of a broader initiative to engage with East Asian businesses. Following the conference, BDA executives traveled to Hong Kong for meetings designed to strengthen partnerships with companies looking to expand their operations across the Atlantic.
