ANTANANARIVO: On Saturday, supporters and critics of Madagascar’s beleaguered government gathered, albeit from a distance, in the capital city, Antananarivo. This took place following several days of intense protests led by young people, which the president has labeled an attempted coup.
These demonstrations, inspired by movements in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Indonesia, are driven by an online youth group called Gen Z Mada. Frustrated with poor governance, many protesters are demanding the resignation of President Andry Rajoelina.
As reported by the United Nations, at least 22 individuals have lost their lives and hundreds have been injured in the unrest. However, the government has downplayed these figures, claiming they are based on rumors or misinformation.
Protesters aimed to gather in central Antananarivo but were met with a significant police presence, which set up roadblocks across various neighborhoods, including Ambondrona.
An 18-year-old student, Ilan Randrianarison, expressed the sentiments of many when he stated, “It’s the shortest route to Ambohijatovo,” referring to their intended meeting spot, known as “Democracy Square”. He added, “Given the violence, the protesters are getting angrier and angrier. We’re here for our comrades,” while sporting a straw hat that has emerged as a symbol of resistance.
