UN Dismisses China-Russia Bid to Extend Sanctions Relief for Iran

UN Rejects Resolution to Extend Sanctions Relief for Iran

On Friday, the United Nations did not pass a resolution proposed by China and Russia to extend sanctions relief for Iran for six more months, in accordance with the nuclear agreement. The final vote was 4 in favor and 9 against, with Algeria, China, Pakistan, and Russia supporting the measure. Opposing it were Denmark, France, Greece, Panama, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Somalia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Guyana and South Korea chose to abstain.

This vote followed a move by Britain, France, and Germany to reactivate sanctions on Iran due to stalled negotiations regarding its nuclear program. If the sanctions proceed, they will target Iranian assets abroad, stop arms sales to Iran, and penalize any advancements in Iran’s missile program.

Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia’s deputy ambassador to the U.N., expressed disappointment, urging European nations and the U.S. to consider diplomatic solutions rather than escalating tensions through what he described as “clumsy blackmail.”

Leading up to the U.N. vote, Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, had discussions with officials from France, Germany, and the UK, although the talks reportedly did not yield any new outcomes. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has also asserted that the country would not yield to external pressures, calling negotiations with the U.S. a “dead end.”

In response to the UN vote, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed that the decision was “unfair, unjust, and illegal.”
