Understanding Autism in Adults: A Hidden Reality

Recent statistics show that one in 36 children in the United States is diagnosed with autism, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. However, many adults remain unaware that they are on the autism spectrum until much later in life.

Those who grow up without a diagnosis often find that their symptoms go unnoticed or are misinterpreted. Currently, about one in 45 adults in the U.S. is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as reported by Autism Speaks, an organization dedicated to raising awareness about autism.

Many Adults Remain Undiagnosed

Despite the growing awareness and advocacy for autism, there are still many adults who either never received a diagnosis or were misdiagnosed. If you believe you or someone close to you might be on the autism spectrum, it’s important to recognize some common signs of autism in adults.

Key Characteristics of Autism

According to the American Psychiatric Association, autism is characterized by challenges with social interaction and the presence of repetitive behaviors or interests. Common traits include:

  • Feeling uncomfortable in social settings
  • Difficulty understanding emotions in others
  • A preference for solitude
  • Challenges in making friends
  • Confusion about social norms

Communication signs include struggles with making eye contact and taking things too literally. People may also display repetitive behaviors, such as needing to stick to the same routine or having intense interests in specific subjects.

The Impact of Life Changes

It’s important to note that adults with autism may not show all these traits, and their behaviors might evolve as they age. Significant life changes—like transitioning to college, getting a new job, or experiencing family changes—can influence how autism manifests in adults.

The Phenomenon of Masking

Many autistic individuals engage in “masking,” a behavior where they hide their symptoms to fit in with others. This can involve mimicking the speech or body language of peers or forcing eye contact, even if it feels uncomfortable. Some individuals may not even realize they are masking.

While masking can help navigate social situations and maintain friendships or job success, it can also lead to negative mental health effects, such as feelings of isolation and fatigue.

Gender Differences in Autism

Research indicates that autistic girls and women tend to be more socially adaptable than their male counterparts, making them more likely to mask their traits. This has led to many women remaining undiagnosed until adulthood.

Experts suggest that societal norms often expect girls to be more socially aware and emotionally expressive, which can make it even harder to spot signs of autism.

Seeking a Diagnosis

Autism is a spectrum, meaning symptoms can look different in everyone. The core features may be similar, but how they present can vary. Recognizing this diversity is crucial for ensuring that more adults receive the support they need.

For those who suspect they may have undiagnosed autism, it’s essential to follow your intuition and seek a formal diagnosis. Start by discussing it with your doctor or checking with your insurance provider to find qualified professionals who can assess adults for autism.

Understanding these aspects of autism can help create a more supportive and inclusive environment for those on the spectrum, fostering a sense of community and acceptance.
