Trump Takes Legal Action Against The New York Times for Defamation, Demands $15 Billion in Damages

Trump Files $15 Billion Lawsuit Against The New York Times

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has launched a hefty lawsuit against the New York Times, four of its reporters, and publisher Penguin Random House, seeking at least $15 billion. The lawsuit, filed in a Florida court, claims defamation and libel, asserting that these publications have harmed his reputation.

The suit references a number of New York Times articles, including an editorial that labeled him unfit for office ahead of the 2024 presidential election. It also points to a book published by Penguin titled “Lucky Loser: How Donald Trump Squandered His Father’s Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success.”

According to the court documents, Trump’s team argues that the defendants knowingly published false and damaging content about him. Trump’s lawyers claim these articles and the book have negatively impacted both his business ventures and personal reputation, resulting in significant financial losses.

For example, they mention the decline in stock value of Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG) as a direct consequence of the alleged defamation. TMTG stock has faced challenges lately, especially due to concerns related to a recent stock market debut.

This lawsuit follows Trump’s previous indication that he would take legal action against the New York Times for its reporting on a note and drawing connected to Jeffrey Epstein, a financier with a controversial past who died in 2019.

In a recent social media post, Trump expressed his intentions regarding the lawsuit, claiming that the New York Times had misrepresented him and his business dealings, as well as issues related to Republican movements like the America First Movement and his MAGA campaign.

Trump has ramped up his legal battles against media organizations this year, including a $10 billion lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal and a settlement earlier with Paramount over a CBS interview that he claimed was misleading.

As this lawsuit unfolds, it highlights the ongoing tensions between Trump and various media outlets.
