Modi Stresses Strong US-India Relations Despite Trump’s Critique

Modi Praises Strong US-India Ties Amid Trump’s Comments

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed optimism about the relationship between India and the United States, following comments from US President Donald Trump that affirmed their friendship. Trump had earlier suggested that India was “lost” to China, but he later clarified that he didn’t believe the US had lost India.

In a recent statement on social media, Modi said he was grateful for Trump’s remarks, describing the US-India partnership as “very positive” and focused on the future. He emphasized that the relationship is not just beneficial, but also comprehensive and global in nature.

However, tensions have surfaced between the two nations, primarily due to tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Indian imports, and accusations that India’s purchase of Russian oil is complicating the situation in Ukraine.

This speculation about a possible divide grew after Trump’s comments during a Friday event, where he mentioned India and Russia as countries that seem to be leaning towards China. His remarks came shortly after Modi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin at a major security summit in Tianjin, marking Modi’s first visit to China in seven years.

The situation was further highlighted when Trump shared a photo of Modi with Xi and Putin, noting how it appeared the US had “lost” these nations to China. Later, when asked about his statement, Trump played down his earlier comments, affirming that he still believes India is an important ally. “I will always be friends with Modi,” he assured, mentioning that the relationship between the two countries remains strong.

Trump and Modi, both known for their populist policies, have enjoyed a close partnership since Trump first took office. But recently, tensions have risen, especially as Trump expressed frustration over India’s stance on the Kashmir issue and his efforts to mediate peace between India and Pakistan.

As the global landscape continues to shift, both leaders seem keen on maintaining their alliance despite emerging challenges.
