India Engages with Australia Amid Anti-Immigrant Protests
On Friday, India announced its active engagement with Australia regarding the recent anti-immigrant protests, which have primarily affected the Indian community living in Australia.
The protests took place across several major cities in Australia last Sunday, raising concerns among the Indian diaspora, which numbers over one million people.
Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, stated that Indian missions in Australia are in close contact with both the Australian government and the local Indian community in light of these events. He emphasized the Indian government’s commitment to the safety and well-being of its citizens living abroad.
Before the protests erupted, the Indian High Commission in Australia had already expressed its worries to the Australian government. Jaiswal mentioned that Australia formally acknowledged the potential concerns surrounding the protests for its diverse communities.
Furthermore, various leaders and politicians in Australia, from both the government and the opposition, have made statements underlining the importance of Australia’s multicultural society. They recognized and valued the contributions of the Indian community.
Jaiswal reiterated India’s belief in diversity as a strength, reinforcing the significance of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Australia. This partnership is enhanced by strong ties between the people of both nations.
