Jhulan Goswami Welcomes Increased Prize Money for 2025 Women’s World Cup
Renowned Indian cricketer Jhulan Goswami is excited about the ICC’s recent decision to boost the prize money for the upcoming 2025 Women’s World Cup. The ICC has announced a total prize pool of 13.88 million USD, which is nearly three times the amount given in 2022 and even surpasses the prize money for the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup.
Goswami believes this increase can spark interest among young cricketers. The tournament, starting on September 30, is expected to be a historic event, with the higher stakes encouraging more women to pursue cricket as a career.
“I’m thrilled by this news. The increased prize money is fantastic. I’d like to thank the ICC for this,” Goswami expressed during an interview.
She added that this decision not only benefits women cricketers but also helps parents feel confident that their daughters can excel in sports. “This shows that women’s cricket is on the rise. It gives parents reassurance that their daughters can pursue this sport professionally. It’s great for all women cricketers and will surely motivate them,” she noted.
The ICC has designed the prize money to reward all participating teams. The champions will walk away with 4.48 million USD, more than double what was awarded to the past champions, while the runners-up will receive 2.24 million USD. Each of these amounts reflects over a 200% increase from the last tournament.
Additionally, both losing semifinalists will earn 1.12 million USD each, and every team that participates in the group stage is guaranteed 250,000 USD. The fifth and sixth-placed teams will take home 700,000 USD each, while the seventh and eighth-placed sides will earn 280,000 USD each. Moreover, each group-stage victory will be rewarded with an additional 34,414 USD.
“Our message is clear: women cricketers deserve the same recognition and rewards as their male counterparts in professional sports,” said ICC Chairman Jay Shah, highlighting the importance of this initiative.
This announcement is a significant step forward in the ICC’s efforts to promote women’s cricket and achieve pay equality with men’s cricket—a commitment first emphasized before the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2024.
The tournament will begin on September 30, with India taking on Sri Lanka in Guwahati. The semifinals are set for October 29 and 30, and the final will take place on November 2.
