Kyiv Hit by Major Russian Attack, 10 Dead and Over 30 Injured

In a devastating overnight assault, Russian forces targeted Kyiv, resulting in the deaths of 10 individuals and injuring at least 38 others, according to Ukrainian officials on Thursday. Among the victims was a child, further highlighting the tragic human cost of the ongoing conflict.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his outrage, stating, “First responders are currently clearing rubble from a regular residential building struck by Russian missiles.” He criticized Russia’s choice of military action over diplomatic solutions, insisting that such aggression demonstrates Russia’s lack of accountability.

Zelenskyy also called for new and stringent sanctions against Russia, emphasizing that all chances for peaceful negotiations have been wasted. “Russia must be held accountable for every strike and every day of this war,” he said, paying tribute to the victims.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that they successfully intercepted 563 of 598 drones and 26 of 31 missiles in this attack, although 13 locations were hit, and debris fell across 26 sites. Kyiv’s military leader, Tymur Tkachenko, noted the coordinated nature of the strikes and described them as systematic attacks on residential areas.

Emergency teams have been working tirelessly, responding to incidents across over 20 locations in the city. Among the damaged structures is a five-story apartment building in the Darnytskyi district, where rescue efforts are ongoing. Fires have also erupted in multiple areas, complicating recovery efforts.

European Council President António Costa expressed his horror at the assault, voicing support for Ukraine and denouncing Russia’s actions as a direct threat to European stability. He reassured that the European Union remains steadfast in its commitment to stand with Ukraine in these troubling times.

As the conflict rages on, hopes for peace seem increasingly distant, with both sides remaining entrenched in their positions.
