Djokovic Advances After Rocky Start

Novak Djokovic fought through a challenging match to secure his spot in the third round of the US Open men’s singles by defeating American Zachary Svadja in four sets on Wednesday, August 27.

The Serbian player stumbled early, losing the first set as Svadja played with impressive confidence, using his strong serve and forehand to dominate the rallies. However, as the second set progressed, Svadja suffered an injury that impacted his serving and movement on the court. Taking advantage of this change, Djokovic stepped up his game and won the next three sets to clinch the victory.

With this win, Djokovic matched Roger Federer’s record for the most hard-court victories in Grand Slam singles, both now sitting at 191 wins. This milestone further highlights Djokovic’s stellar career as he continues to chase more success in New York.

Reflecting on his performance, Djokovic acknowledged his rocky start. “Honestly, I didn’t feel great at the beginning. I wasn’t satisfied with my play early on, but I have to give credit to Zach for his excellent tennis,” he remarked. “It was unfortunate he dealt with an injury towards the end of the second set, but it’s commendable that he stayed in the match. It was evident he couldn’t serve like he did initially. I wished him all the best after the match because he played very well.”

When asked about finding his rhythm in Grand Slam tournaments, Djokovic noted, “I hope to improve as the tournament progresses. That’s been the case for most of my Grand Slam journey. The deeper I go into these events, the better I tend to feel about my game. Recently, though, my body has faced more wear and tear, so I have to focus on recovery to keep performing at a high level.”

Djokovic’s next match will be against the winner of the second-round match between Cameron Norrie from the UK and Argentina’s Francisco Comesana.
