Australia Expels Iranian Diplomats Over Antisemitic Attacks
Australia has decided to expel two Iranian diplomats, citing that the Iranian government was involved in recent antisemitic attacks in Sydney and Melbourne. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed this information during a press conference, stating that the country’s main spy agency, ASIO, had collected credible intelligence pointing to Iran’s involvement in these incidents.
Prime Minister Albanese described the situation as “deeply disturbing,” referring to attacks that targeted a restaurant in Sydney and a synagogue in Melbourne. He emphasized that while Iran tried to hide its role, ASIO believes the nation was behind these attacks.
Along with the expulsion of the diplomats, Australia has relocated its own diplomats from Iran to a safer country.
Antisemitic incidents have surged in Melbourne and Sydney following the outbreak of violence in Israel on October 7, 2023, which led to a military response in Gaza. In response, the Australian government is also set to label Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization.
This action follows Australia’s recent announcement to support the recognition of Palestinian statehood at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel sharply criticized Australia’s stance, accusing the government of betraying Israel and its Jewish community.
This move marks a significant shift in Australia’s foreign policy regarding the Middle East and highlights the increasing tensions surrounding the Israel-Palestine conflict.
