Russian Hero Revealed as Leader of Fraud Scheme
A prominent Russian military figure, known for his remarkable achievements on the battlefield, has been exposed as the alleged orchestrator of a significant fraud operation. This scheme reportedly involved elite soldiers intentionally injuring themselves, including their own commander, to claim substantial payments for combat injuries.
Local reports indicate that Lieutenant Colonel Konstantin Frolov—dubbed “the Executioner” due to his sniper prowess—didn’t just fabricate tales of heroism but also assisted his unit in embezzling nearly $2.5 million from military resources, according to the Russian newspaper Kommersant. A former brigade commander, Artem Gorodilov, is also named in the investigation.
It is claimed that at least 35 members of Russia’s esteemed 83rd Separate Guards Air Assault Brigade remained absent from combat zones while receiving nearly $40,000 each, as reported.
Frolov gained fame during President Vladimir Putin’s military campaign in Ukraine, allegedly surviving multiple injuries, for which he received four “Orders of Courage,” one of the country’s highest military honors, alongside other awards for bravery.
However, investigators now suggest that his injuries were staged. Reports suggest that Frolov ordered his own troops to shoot him in a way that would avoid hitting any vital organs.
The scandal began to unfold last summer after a whistleblower alerted the authorities. Frolov was detained in June 2024, followed by Gorodilov in July, with both now facing fraud charges.
Additionally, Frolov is accused of unlawfully keeping three captured pistols, a machine gun, and other military weapons. Both he and Gorodilov have been charged with large-scale fraud.
