The much-anticipated sequel to Rowdy Rathore is no longer in development. Sources from the film industry have confirmed that producers Shabinaa Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali have decided to abandon the project after three years of attempts that ultimately did not bear fruit. Instead, the script intended for the sequel will now be transformed into a standalone film.
Disney India, which holds the rights to the original Rowdy Rathore (2012), has been reluctant to approve the sequel, despite some initial discussions. Due to Disney’s hesitance, Khan and Bhansali opted to scrap the sequel idea altogether and shift their focus to creating a new film based on the existing script.
Written by seasoned screenwriter V. Vijayendra Prasad, the script is being revised to develop a fresh, high-energy cop drama. The goal is to capture the spirit of the original hit while delivering exciting entertainment that appeals to a wide audience.
Renowned Tamil director P.S. Mithran is set to take the helm of this new project, with plans to start production early next year. Mithran is known for his successful films, including Irumbu Thirai and Hero. His upcoming movie, Sardar 2, is scheduled for release in December 2025.
As for the casting of this new action film, no official announcements have been made yet. However, reports suggest that Sidharth Malhotra, who was originally considered for the lead role, may no longer be in the picture. The production team is now looking for a younger, more bankable star to play the role of a dedicated police officer, ready to go to great lengths for his community. Filming is expected to begin in early 2026.
